SAFF U-20 champs get heroes welcome 

The victorious Bangladesh Under-20 football team received a warm and ceremonial reception upon their arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal Int'l Airport in the evening on Saturday, as the nation celebrated a memorable back-to-back SAFF Underr-20 Championship triumph.

Fresh from their dramatic success in the Maldives, the young footballers were greeted with floral wreath by the State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, who welcomed the team on behalf of the government. The reception at the airport carried both pride and symbolism, reflecting the growing importance of youth football in the country's sporting landscape.

Bangladesh secured the title in nerve-wracking fashion, defeating arch-rivals India 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless 90 minutes in the final at the National Stadium in Male. 

Goalkeeper Mahin emerged as a key figure with a crucial save, while striker Ronan Sullivan sealed the victory with a composed Panenka, ensuring the trophy remained in Bangladeshi hands for a second consecutive time. Previously, Bangladesh won its first trophy of the tournament in 2024. 

Following the airport reception, the team embarked on a celebratory open-top bus parade from the airport to Hatirjheel Amphitheatre, where a formal civic reception was arranged by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Bangladesh Football Federation. The arrangement mirrored past national celebrations, underlining the significance of the achievement.

Supporters gathered in large numbers along the way, waving flags and applauding the country's new footballing heroes. The government has also announced financial rewards for the team, reinforcing its commitment to recognising sporting excellence.

This triumphant homecoming not only marks another chapter of regional dominance but also signals a promising horizon for Bangladesh football, driven by a fearless and resilient new generation.
