A young man was allegedly beaten to death by his rivals over past enmity in Nababganj upazila of Dhaka on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Mithun, 29, son of Kismat Ali, a resident of Chhatia area under the upazila. Police have detained a local Union Parishad (UP) member, Nannu Mia, for questioning in connection with the incident.

According to police, the conflict stems from an incident on March 24, when Mithun allegedly led an attack on former UP member Dolly Akhter, leaving her critically injured with hack wounds. Dolly is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and a case was filed with Nababganj Police Station naming Mithun as the third accused.

Witnesses said that on Thursday night, around 10:00 PM, supporters of Dolly Akhter intercepted Mithun in Chhatia area and beat him mercilessly. The attackers reportedly left him by the roadside, assuming he was dead.

Later, passersby rescued Mithun and rushed him to Nababganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Pangu Hospital) in Dhaka, where he succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning.

Being informed, police visited the spot and detained Nannu Mia, Dolly’s brother and a sitting UP member, for interrogation.

Nababganj Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that the process of filing a case is underway.
