More than 250 people are feared dead or missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Andaman Sea, according to UN refugee and migration agencies.

The vessel, reportedly carrying over 250 men, women and children, had departed from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh and was headed for Malaysia when it sank on April 9 amid heavy winds, rough seas and severe overcrowding.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed deep concern over the incident, warning that it highlights the continued risks faced by people undertaking dangerous sea journeys in search of safety and better opportunities.

"This incident is a stark reminder of the grave risks people continue to face when undertaking dangerous sea journeys in search of safety and better opportunities," said IOM spokesperson Mohammedali Abunajela. "No one should have to choose between remaining in situations of profound hardship or embarking on a journey that may cost them their lives."

The tragedy underscores the worsening humanitarian situation faced by Rohingya refugees, driven by deteriorating conditions in camps, limited access to essential services, declining humanitarian assistance, and ongoing uncertainty over safe return to Myanmar's Rakhine State.

The IOM also warned that smuggling and trafficking networks continue to exploit vulnerable populations, including both Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, for profit.
