Hossain Zillur cites 3 failures of Yunus-led interim govt

Former adviser to the 2007�"08 caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman on Saturday identified three major failures of the interim government that took office after the July uprising, alleging that it misdirected young people by encouraging them to seek political power rather than long-term leadership.

He made the remarks at a discussion held at a hotel in the capital. The event was organised by SOAS Anti-Corruption Evidence, an international anti-corruption research consortium run by SOAS University of London. During the programme, SOAS professors Mushtaq Khan and Pallavi Roy presented two papers on the 2007�"08 caretaker government and the July uprising.

Referring to the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, Hossain Zillur said it made three major mistakes. He said the government relied too heavily on bureaucrats, gave young people the wrong direction and failed to implement its own reform agenda.

According to him, the government encouraged young people to seek political power instead of preparing them for disciplined and responsible leadership. He said this weakened their long-term vision. It also led many young people to place less importance on education.
