Railway Police have formed a three-member committee to investigate the suicide of a police constable who shot himself while on duty in Khulna.

The committee was constituted on Saturday, a day after the incident, and began its work on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturtday, Constable Samrat Biswas reportedly died after shooting himself with a rifle in front of the armoury at the Railway Police Superintendent’s office in the early hours.

Confirming the development, Khulna Railway Police Superintendent Ahmad Mainul Hasan said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafiqul Islam has been made head of the probe body. The other members are Railway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Ferdous Alam Khan and Detective Branch OC Abu Hasan.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within four working days.

Meanwhile, investigators said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, although preliminary findings suggest personal issues may have contributed.

Sonadanga Police Station investigating officer SI Suman Hawlader said the probe formally began on Sunday. “The deceased had spoken online before the incident, but no SIM card was used during the communication,” he said.

He added that Samrat had been married for only six months and was reportedly facing marital discord and mental stress. “Prolonged pressure and distance between the couple may have been contributing factors,” he noted.

Police said the victim’s mobile phone has been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Khulna for forensic analysis, while the main investigation is being conducted by the concerned police station.

According to sources, Samrat was on duty around 4:30 AM when he allegedly took a Chinese rifle from the armoury trunk and shot himself in the head.

Further details are expected following the completion of the investigation.
