The government has moved to revise the recently introduced police uniform following growing dissatisfaction within the force and concerns raised by frontline personnel.
A proposal submitted by Bangladesh Police headquarters to the Ministry of Home Affairs recommends amendments to the Police Dress Rules-2025, citing negative sentiment among officers as well as public feedback.
Under the proposed changes, Metropolitan Police personnel would wear light olive shirts, while officers in district and other units would use deep blue shirts.
Trousers for all units would remain khaki. However, the revised dress code would not apply to specialised units such as APBn, SPBn, SB, CID and RAB.
In a letter sent on April 15, Police Headquarters noted that the current uniform; featuring “iron”-coloured shirts and “coffee”-coloured trousers, had drawn criticism from field-level officers. Many personnel reportedly faced ridicule on social media, which affected morale.
Bangladesh Police Service Association also raised concerns that similarities with other agencies’ uniforms made it harder for the public to distinguish police officers.
DIG Sarwar Morshed Shamim from the Logistics Division said the proposed revision would not create any additional financial burden, as uniforms are issued annually under existing entitlements. Once approved, the new design will be distributed in the next cycle.
The association added that the earlier khaki and blue uniform used since 2003"04 was more suitable for the country’s climate and appearance.
It said the current initiative aims to restore tradition and discipline while reflecting the views of serving officers.
