Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Shafiqur Rahman, has alleged that the interim government was involved in a conspiracy to ensure the defeat of the 11-party alliance in the election.

He made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled "Spirit of the Mass Uprising, Implementation of the People's Referendum Verdict, and Trial of the July Massacre and Crimes Against Humanity" in the capital on Wednesday (July 8).

"We wanted an election, but not a conspiracy in the name of an election," Shafiqur Rahman said. "A conspiracy was carried out, and we condemn it. The interim government, which claimed to be neutral and non-partisan, was also part of that conspiracy. They themselves admitted that the 11-party alliance was defeated through a conspiracy."

He said the alliance nevertheless accepted the election results in the interest of maintaining stability.

"If we had rejected the election results at that time, claiming they were the outcome of a conspiracy, no one knows how far the resulting disorder in the country might have gone," he said. "The 11-party alliance acted responsibly. However, while accepting the election outcome, we also made it clear that we would not allow the people's referendum verdict to be ignored."

Shafiqur Rahman also said he had received formal proposals on 10 or 11 occasions to form a constitutional amendment commission for carrying out reforms.

"Our clear response has been that no commission is needed to amend the Constitution," he said. "The ruling party can introduce an amendment bill from the treasury bench, and the opposition can also table one. The bill should go through the parliamentary process, be debated, and then put to a vote. If it secures approval, it becomes law."

He argued that the referendum was not held to establish a constitutional amendment commission but to bring about fundamental changes to what he described as the country's "rotten political system."
