Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof ABM Obaidul Islam on Friday said students found involved in the recent attack on journalists will face permanent expulsion following a formal investigation.

He made the remarks while receiving a list of alleged perpetrators from the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom on campus.

“We will definitely expel anyone found guilty in the investigation,” the VC said, adding that the university administration is treating the matter with utmost priority and will take action in line with institutional rules.

The administration has formed two separate probe committees, one to examine relevant facebook communications and another to investigate the physical assault and identify those involved.

DUJA submitted a petition naming 12 accused individuals, along with details including their departments, academic sessions, residential halls and registration numbers. The association also issued an ultimatum demanding their expulsion by Friday afternoon.

Among its demands, DUJA called for immediate and permanent expulsion of all students involved, cancellation of certificates of those who have already completed their studies and identification of other accomplices.

The incident took place at Shahbagh Police Station, where several journalists were attacked while performing their professional duties.
