Two young sisters tragically drowned while bathing in a pond in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 11:00 AM at South Charclerk area of Charclerk union in the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rokshana Akter, 9, and Afsana Akter, 5, daughters of Mohi Uddin from Gangchil village of Companiganj upazila. Both were students at a local madrasa.

According to family members, the sisters had been staying at their maternal grandfather’s house with their parents. The children went to bathe in a nearby farm pond without the knowledge of their family. At one point, Afsana began to drown and Rokshana attempted to rescue her. Tragically, both sisters went underwater.

Relatives later began searching and recovered one of the bodies from the pond.

The other was retrieved using a fishing net. The children were immediately taken to a local village doctor, who declared them dead.

Char Jabbar Police Station inspector (investigation) Debashish Das said that the victims’ relatives have contacted law enforcement authorities.

An unnatural death (UD) case has been filed and the bodies have been handed over to the family, added the police official.
