8 workers killed in truck-pickup van collision on way to work

Eight workers were killed and several injured in a collision between a pickup van and a truck in Sylhet's South Surma on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred at about 6AM near Telibazar bridge on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police's Deputy Police Commissioner Md Riazul Kabir said the deceased were going towards Sunamganj by a DI pickup.

According to the local residents, four died on the scene and four others on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The bodies have been kept at the hospital.

Both the pickup and truck drivers fled the scene after the accident. 

Police have identified four of the deceased as Md Suruj Ali, 60, from Bhatipara village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj; Mosammat Munni, 35, daughter of Abdul Basir from Sheshti village of the same upazila; Md Badrul, 30, son of Sujat Ali from Lalargaon under Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet; and Md Faridul, 35, son of the late Nur Salam from Nurnagar area of Dirai upazila.
