A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former DGFI official Manzil Haider Chowdhury on a four-day remand in a case over the killing of garment worker Rubel during the July uprising in the capital’s Adabar area.

The order was passed by separate Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate courts after hearing a petition moved by the Detective Branch (DB) of police seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation. The defence, however, opposed the plea and prayed for bail, which was rejected by the court.

Earlier, the accused was shown arrested in the Rubel murder case after being taken into custody on April 9 from DOHS Mohakhali in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud in the New Market area. He was subsequently placed on multiple remands and later sent to jail custody.

According to the case statement, Rubel joined a protest march with hundreds of students and civilians in Adabar’s Ring Road area around 11 AM on August 5, the final day of the July uprising. It is alleged that police, along with Awami League activists and affiliated groups, opened fire during the protest, leaving Rubel bullet-injured. He was later taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case with Adabar Police Station on August 22.

Legal proceedings are underway.
