The High Court (HC) on Monday issued a rule asking why the government should not be directed to provide Taka 25 lakh in compensation to each of the 208 expatriates who faced imprisonment abroad for their roles in the July mass uprising.

A HC bench, led by Justice Fatema Najib, issued the rule following a petition.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and other relevant officials have been asked to respond to the rule.

Barrister H.M. Sanjid Siddiqui, who represented the petitioners in court, stated that the group includes 57 workers who were convicted and sentenced in the United Arab Emirates for demonstrating in support of the July movement.

He noted that the government has officially recognized all 208 individuals, including the 57 UAE returnees, as 'July fighters.'
