CHATTOGRAM, May 4: Detective Branch (DB)-Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMC) arrested 14 members of a banned Awami League (AL)-backed organization during a secret meeting on Sunday in local a restaurant in Nayabazar Bishwa Road area of Halishahar in the city.
They were arrested in a raid in the restaurant at Nayabazar Bishwa Road intersection at about 7:30pm.
Arrestees were identified as Md. Shahidul Islam, 37, Md. Nayan, 19, Mehedi Hasan Sohan, 21, Md. Ibrahim, 24, Sajjad Hossain Rakib, 24, Md. Ismail, 26, Rabiul Islam Raju, 20, Md. Shakil Khan, 20, Md. Rajib, 29, Md. Ashraful, 19, Zahed Hossain, 34, Md. Arif, 25, Md. Rafi, 20, Imam Hossain, 30.
According police sources, 100-120 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) had a secret meeting; sensing the presence of the police, they tried to escape; and at that time, 14 persons were held, while others manage to escape the arrest. Two Android phones were seized from the arrestees.
Police said that a case is underway with Halishahar Police Station against the arrested 14 and 90-95 unidentified people.
DB Deputy Police Commissioner (DPC-North) Md. Habibur Rahman confirmed this matter and said it was organized under the banner of an organization called 'Sheikh Hasina Oikya Parishad'.
"We have arrested a total of 14 people, including the main organizer," he added.
DB-DPC said, "We had information that they were planning a major anti-state conspiracy. Our operation is continuing to arrest the remaining members of this gang".
