Several hours of heavy rains have left parts of Chattogram city waterlogged again, causing immense suffering to Muslims saying the weekly Friday prayers at mosques.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded around 64mm of rain for six hours starting at 12pm on Friday, following a relentless heatwave for the last few days.
Water stagnation was reported in the city’s low-lying areas including Katalganj, Panchlaish, and Bakalia.
The water receded from most areas by the evening.
Meanwhile, during the heavy downpour around 2pm, Mayor Shahadat Hossain visited many important roads, canals and waterlogged areas of the city and ordered measures to keep the water drainage system effective.
He, however, said: “Despite the heavy rainfall for a long time, water has drained quickly in most areas of the city. No significant water-logging has occurred anywhere.”
BMD Forecasting Officer Ismail Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com that the monsoon arrived in Chattogram on Jun 6, leading to the incessant rainfall.
