Man held over hacking sleeping wife to death in Narail

A man was arrested for allegedly hacking his sleeping wife to death at Narail sadar upazila on Tuesday.
 
The incident occurred at Bahirgram area of Kalora union of the upazila.
 
The victim Chandni Akter Khadija, 24, was the daughter of Kalam Sheikh from Phultala upazila in Khulna. 

Her accused husband Sakib Sheikh is also from the same upazila.
 
According to local sources, the couple had arrived at Khadija's aunt’s house in Bahirgram on Monday for a visit. Reportedly the couple frequently engaged in domestic disputes due to Sakib’s drug addiction and unemployment.

On Tuesday night, Sakib allegedly attacked Khadija with a machete while she was asleep, leaving her critically injured. 

Relatives rushed her to Narail District Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Narail Sadar Police Station Inspector Ajay Kumar Kundu stated that the family initially claimed Khadija had accidentally fallen onto the blade. 

However, police grew suspicious after finding inconsistencies in Sakib’s statements and evidence at the crime scene. Under interrogation, Sakib confessed to the murder, he added.

Police have taken the suspect into custody and confirmed that legal proceedings are underway. The exact motive behind the killing is still being investigated, the official said.
