A strong earthquake struck Bhutan late Sunday night, sending tremors across Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh.
The 5.6 magnitude quake occurred at 11:36 PM, though no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties have been confirmed.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 15 kilometers west-northwest of Punakha, a major town in western Bhutan.
The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface. The center of the seismic activity was about 432 kilometers away from Dhaka.
Reports of tremors came in from across northern Bangladesh, including districts such as Rangpur, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Kushtia, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Bogra, and Sherpur. Residents in these areas felt distinct vibrations that caused brief panic.
According to the Android Earthquake Alerts System, the seismic waves were also felt in neighboring India, Nepal, and China.
