In a daring daylight attack, a man was shot and robbed of $17,000 USD in Dhaka’s Motijheel commercial district on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place around 3:00 pm directly in front of a Janata Bank branch. The victim, identified as Lokman from the Shahjahanpur area, was reportedly accosted by a group of unidentified assailants who had been trailing him.
According to Kamaruzzaman Talukder, Officer-in-Charge of Motijheel Police Station, the attackers confronted Lokman and demanded the cash he was carrying. When he resisted, the criminals opened fire, striking him in the hand and leg before fleeing the scene with the money.
Witnesses and police helped move the injured man to Mugda Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds.
"We suspect the attackers were monitoring the victim’s movements," OC Kamaruzzaman said. He added that police teams have already inspected the site and are reviewing available evidence to track down the perpetrators. An investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible for the brazen shooting and theft.
