Former national captain Tamim Iqbal has been officially elected as the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board for a four-year term.

Following a highly anticipated yet predictable election at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, the new chief addressed criticisms of political influence and pledged to restore the tarnished reputation of the country's cricketing governing body.

The election process had faced intense public scrutiny over alleged political interference, particularly regarding the nomination of relatives of government ministers and lawmakers.

The controversy previously prompted Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah to mockingly dub Tamim's preceding 11-member ad-hoc committee the "Father's Blessing Cricket Board."

Responding to the criticism with a smile during his post-election press conference, Tamim stated that people are free to give various tags based on their personal opinions. "Let us see if we can transform this from a 'father's blessing' into 'cricket's blessing' in the future," he said.

Tamim emphasized to his fellow directors that regardless of their personal backgrounds, their sole collective responsibility is to serve and advance Bangladesh cricket.

The election itself was largely a formality, as the blueprint for the 21st BCB president and the board of directors was heavily pre-determined. In Category-1, which represents district and divisional sports associations, seven of the ten directors were elected unopposed.

Voting only took place for the Barishal and Khulna divisions. Fortune Barishal franchise owner Mizanur Rahman won the Barishal seat, while Shafiqul Alam and Shantanu Islam were elected from Khulna.

In Category-2, representing Dhaka clubs, Tamim secured the highest mandate with 73 votes among 16 candidates vying for 12 posts.

The fiercest battle was for the 12th position, which Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed secured with 41 votes, edging out Syed Borhanul Hossain by a single ballot. Meanwhile, Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir from Chittagong University was elected uncontested in Category-3.

Addressing concerns about electoral transparency, Tamim addressed the recommendations made by a National Sports Council inquiry committee. The committee was formed to investigate the irregularities of the previous October 6 election under former board president Aminul Islam.

While the recommended constitutional changes were not implemented in this election, Tamim assured that the BCB general assembly would discuss and decide on these reforms in the future.

Looking ahead, the new president highlighted his primary vision of establishing a self-sufficient High-Performance Center in Purbachal.

He revealed that the BCB has invited the Australian architectural firm Populous to Dhaka to redesign the facility, as their initial blueprint did not meet his expectations despite prior payments.

Tamim expressed optimism that with prompt discussions and government support, construction of the state-of-the-art center will commence shortly.
