BARAIGRAM, NATORE, May 8: The foundation stone for the long-awaited bridge over the Baral River in Baraigram, Natore, has been laid.

Under the supervision of LGED, the 35-metre-long bridge will be constructed at a cost of Tk 3,64,74,385. Since the old bridge collapsed here about three years ago, over one lakh people from Baraigram municipality and three unions have been enduring severe hardship.

On Thursday afternoon at Chak Baraigram in Baraigram municipality, Abdul Aziz, Member of Parliament for the Natore-4 constituency, inaugurated the work as the chief guest by unveiling a nameplate.

The opening ceremony, presided over by UNO Layla Jannatul Ferdous, featured speeches by special guests: Iqbal Hossain, Executive Engineer of the Local Government Division, Natore; Abdus Salam, OC of Baraigram Police Station; former municipal mayor Isahak Ali; Ashraf Ali, Principal and Member of the District BNP; Iman Ali, former vice-president of Baraigram Municipal BNP; Belal Hossain, former general secretary; Sultan Mahmud, Upazila Engineer; Abdus Salam, former UP chairman; Mubarak Hossain Tipu, former joint general secretary of Municipal BNP; and Masum Reza, Convener of the Municipal Chatra Dal.

In August 2023, the 30-year-old bridge, built using a pile-less brick wall method, collapsed due to water currents. This cut off the only route for residents of about 20 villages in Baraigram municipality and three unions to travel to the upazila headquarters. Once the new bridge is completed, over one lakh people in the area will be freed from their suffering.
