3 to die, 6 to life term over Rajbari village doctor murder case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced three people to death and six others to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of a village doctor in Rajbari’s Goalanda upazila in 2019.

Judge Md Rahibul Islam of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict.

The convicts sentenced to death are Bablu Sardar, Tokon Sardar and Gajiar Sarkar.

The six others sentenced to life-term imprisonment are Atar Ali Chairman, Raihan Sardar, Habibur Rahman Hobi Sardar, Helal Khan, Zillur Rahman and Zia Mondal. The court also fined each of them Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer additional imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on October 14, 2019, centring on a dispute during a ward conference of Bangladesh Awami League in Goalanda area.

Supporters of rival local leaders attacked each other at a market intersection during the conference. At that time, village doctor Md Rezaul Karim, also known as Abu Doctor, was passing through the area and came under attack, leaving him critically injured.

He was first taken to Goalanda General Hospital and later shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, Md Mobarak Molla filed the case. Police submitted the charge sheet against 22 accused on October 5, 2022.

During the trial, the tribunal recorded testimonies of 29 prosecution witnesses before pronouncing the judgement.
