President Shahabuddin to leave Bangabhaban, move to Gulshan residence on Sunday

The president is currently staying at Bangabhaban, the official presidential residence, but will leave the premises after the completion of the constitutional process of his resignation. He will then relocate to his own house in Gulshan along with his family, the sources said.

Preparations for his relocation, including security arrangements and administrative measures, have already begun at the Gulshan residence. Sources said a new telephone connection has been installed there along with other necessary arrangements.

Although the President’s Office has not made any official statement on the matter, officials familiar with the process said the preparations are nearing completion.

Before becoming president, Shahabuddin lived at the same Gulshan residence with his family. After leaving office, he is returning to his previous home.

Relevant government agencies will take necessary measures regarding his security, movement and protocol after his departure from Bangabhaban. Security activities around the Gulshan residence may also be strengthened, officials said.

In his resignation letter submitted on Thursday, Shahabuddin cited health complications as the reason for stepping down. He mentioned that he had been suffering from various health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. He also referred to his previous bypass surgery and said he had recently been diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy, which sometimes causes him to become unconscious for brief periods.

He said his physical and mental condition, along with the need for long-term treatment, had made it difficult for him to continue performing the duties of the presidency. Exercising the power granted under Article 50(3) of the Constitution, he announced his resignation from the post.

Under the Constitution, a president seeking to resign must submit a resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament. The formal departure from Bangabhaban will be completed after the constitutional procedure is concluded.

According to Article 54 of the Constitution, if the office of the president becomes vacant or the president is unable to perform duties due to absence or illness, the Speaker of Parliament will act as the president until a new president is elected.
