Flash floods submerge low-lying areas as rivers continue to rise

Heavy rainfall and an intensified rush of water from upstream hilly regions have caused water levels to rise across major rivers in the country, flooding low-lying areas.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned on Wednesday, May 13, that the situation is likely to worsen over the next two to three days.

The latest FFWC report indicates that the Brahmaputra River has seen a steady rise in water levels over the past 24 hours. Forecasts suggest that the Surma and Kushiyara rivers will continue to swell for the next two days, while the Bhugai-Kongso in Netrokona and the Jadukata in Sunamganj are expected to experience rapid increases, potentially lasting for the next 72 hours.

Furthermore, the Manu, Khowai, and Juri rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts are on a rising trend. The impact is already being felt in Mymensingh’s Haluaghat upazila, where flash floods from the bordering Garo Hills have submerged the Gazir Bhita and Bhuban Kura areas.

Overflowing water from the Bhoraghat River has inundated local settlements and vast tracts of farmland. The force of the current has reportedly washed away two unpaved roads, cutting off communication for several villages.

Local residents expressed deep concern that continued water inflow will lead to a severe crisis. In response, local administrations have initiated measures to monitor the situation and mitigate potential damage.

Disaster management teams are reportedly on standby as the water continues to spread into new territories across the northeastern and northern regions.
