Land officer killed in N’ganj road accident

A municipal land official was killed after a speeding truck hit his motorcycle at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district, on Thursday morning.

The accident took place around 9:30am at Mirertik Bazar area under Jampur union on the Asian Highway.

The deceased was identified as Md Anwar Hossain, 58, an assistant land officer of Gopaldi Municipality at Araihazar upazila and he lived at Masdair area of Narayanganj sadar.

According to locals and highway police, Anwar Hossain was travelling by motorcycle from his home to his workplace when a speeding truck heading towards Gausia struck his motorcycle from behind. The impact threw him onto the road, leaving him critically injured and he died on the spot.

After the collision, the truck driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. Police later recovered the body and sent it to a morgue for autopsy.

Victim’s relatives said Anwar Hossain joined the land department in 1996 and was currently posted as a municipal land officer at Araihazar.

Confirming the incident, Kanchpur Highway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Shamim Sheikh said the victim died in a road accident while travelling to his destination on a motorcycle.

He added that the driver could not immediately be identified as he fled the scene after the crash. 

However, police have seized both the truck and the motorcycle and legal proceedings are underway, the OC added.
