Police have arrested a father at Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona district for allegedly raping his 16-year-old daughter repeatedly over the last six months. The victim is now reportedly pregnant as a result of the abuse.

The arrested father is identified as Shafiqul Islam, 48, from Bishkakuni village of the upazila.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when the victim, supported by local Union Parishad members Hafiz Uddin and Ziaur Rahman, filed a written complaint with Purbadhala Police Station.

Following the complaint, police conducted a drive and apprehended Shafiqul from the Garuakanda area of Khalishapur union that afternoon.

According to police and local sources, the girl had been working as a domestic helper in Dhaka. About six months ago, her father brought her back to their home. Shortly after her return, Shafiqul allegedly began raping her regularly under threats of violence.

Two months ago, she was sent to another job in Mymensingh, where her employer noticed physical changes and found out her pregnancy.

When Shafiqul learned the secret was out, he brought her home again and threatened her to stay silent. However, as local suspicion grew, the girl decided to seek legal action.

Purbadhala Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that a formal case has been registered.

"We managed to arrest the accused within the shortest possible time. Medical examinations for the victim and other legal proceedings are currently underway. The arrested individual is being prepared for produced before the court," the OC stated.
