At least five persons were injured when they tried to save themselves from fire that broke out on the third floor of Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters have brought the blaze under control after nearly an hour of efforts.

Injured hospital staff Saidur Rahman, 50, senior nurse Nawrin, Dipali and Shamrmin and Fire Service members Tawhid are currently undergoing treatment at a nearby private hospital.

Three Fire Service and Civil Defence units rushed to the hospital's main building after flames broke out on the third floor around 6AM.

Seven more units joined shortly after.

Smoke swept through the building, sparking panic across the entire hospital complex. Many patients and their attendants abandoned their beds and rushed outside.

They alleged that the surgery conducts 24 hours a day at OC. The incident of a fire there that consumed everything is mysterious. A proper investigation is needed.

No casualties have been reported. A damage assessment is under way.

Masud Sardar, assistant director of the Fire Service, said, ''A preliminary investigation pointed to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause.''
