Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities on Thursday announced five additional measures to strengthen campus security and expedite the arrest of the accused in the attempted rape and murder of a female student on May 12.

The announcements came at a press conference held at the university’s Senate Hall, where Treasurer Prof Md Abdur Rob and Proctor Prof A K M Rashidul Alam briefed journalists on the latest steps taken by the administration.

Proctor Prof Rashidul Alam said a seven-member investigation committee had already started its work to probe the incident. The university administration also declared a reward of Tk 50,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

He said several law enforcement agencies, including district police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Detective Branch (DB), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), were jointly conducting drives to apprehend the accused.

According to the proctor, police cyber units and the RAB intelligence wing are assisting the investigation through technological surveillance and digital tracking.

The university administration said authorities at the highest level of the state had instructed law enforcement agencies to ensure the swift arrest of the accused.

Speaking at the briefing, Treasurer Prof Md Abdur Rob described the incident as “heinous” and said the university administration remained deeply concerned over the matter.

He said the administration had already started implementing 14 decisions adopted at an emergency meeting chaired by the vice-chancellor (VC) following demands raised by students and different student organizations.

The treasurer also announced the formation of a permanent committee to prevent bullying and ragging in line with the “Policy on Prevention of Bullying and Ragging in Educational Institutions-2023.”

Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman, assistant proctors and other administrative officials were also present at the press conference.
