Police have arrested Jatiya Nagorik Party’s (NCP) central joint member secretary Tareq Reza from Jhenaidah town on Sunday evening.
According to police, Tareq Reza was arrested at around 6:30 PM from in front of the Family Zone auditorium adjacent to Jhenaidah Stadium when he arrived in front of the auditorium to attend an emergency press conference.
Confirming the detention, Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Asaduzzaman said that Tareq Reza was taken into custody in connection with an ongoing case filed against him.
The OC said a case was filed on Saturday against Tareq Reza and several others over allegations of attack, vandalism and issuing death threats.
Earlier on May 22, tensions had escalated in Jhenaidah when clashes broke out between activists of the NCP and the local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) following the visit of NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary. The incident reportedly involved scuffles, chases and counter-chases after Friday prayers.
Following the incident, Tareq Reza filed a case against eight local JCD leaders. In response, JCD leader Enamul Kabir filed a counter-case the next day, accusing 22 people, including Tareq Reza. He was arrested in connection with that case on Sunday evening.
