Today is the 11th day of Jyeshtha and the 127th birth anniversary of Bangladesh's National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, widely known as the Rebel Poet. Various programmes are being held across the country in remembrance of the poet whose works championed rebellion, equality, humanity and communal harmony.
Programmes are being held from Dhaka to Trishal in Mymensingh, Cumilla and Chattogram, with government agencies, educational institutions and cultural organisations organising discussions, poetry recitations, Nazrul Sangeet performances, book exhibitions and memorial events.
Nazrul was born on May 24, 1899, the 11th day of Jyeshtha 1306, in Churulia village of Asansol subdivision in Burdwan district, present day West Bengal, India. A poet, lyricist, composer, essayist and journalist, he became one of the most influential figures in Bengali literature, known for writings against exploitation and oppression and for freedom and justice.
The government has also undertaken extensive commemorative programmes, alongside initiatives by educational and cultural institutions to introduce his life and works to younger generations.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has declared a year-long observance of "Nazrul Barsho" from May 25, 2026 to May 25, 2027. He also called upon the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the tourism authorities to examine the feasibility of declaring Trishal, a place closely associated with the poet's life and memories, as "Nazrul City".
The main national observance is being held in Trishal, featuring day long discussions, cultural events and Nazrul Sangeet performances at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University and the Nazrul Academy.
