A 55-year-old woman was killed after being attacked by her son with a sharp weapon in Cumilla city on Tuesday morning, police and local witnesses said.

The incident took place in West Baludhum area of Chawkbazar in Cumilla.

The victim, Rehana Begum, was allegedly attacked by her son, Ramim Islam Babu, 27, son of late Monirul Islam.

According to witnesses, Ramim struck his mother on the head with a machete-like weapon during an altercation at their home. Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing Rehana Begum’s screams and took her to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Local resident Maulana Tajul Islam said the accused was allegedly addicted to drugs and had frequently abused his mother.

“He had been pressuring his mother for drug money since last night. In the morning, we saw him attack her with a sharp weapon. She died on the way to the hospital,” the witness said.

Police later arrested Ramim from the Tomchom Bridge area of the city, according to Tapas Chandra Roy, in-charge of the Chawkbazar police outpost.

Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidur Anwar said the suspect was mentally unstable and that police responded immediately after receiving information about the incident.

“We rushed to the scene after learning about the attack. The woman died while being taken for medical treatment,” he said, adding that preparations were underway to file a case over the killing.
