A student of University of Dhaka was killed along with her mother and two sisters in a brutal attack at their rented home of Raipur upazila of Laxmipur district on Thursday, while the suspected attacker later died after being beaten by an angry mob.
The victims were identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, her elder daughter Sayma Akter, 21, a student of the University of Dhaka, and her two younger daughters Ikra Akter, 17, a Class XII student of Raipur Kazi Faruki College and Shifa Akter, 9.
The incident took place at a rented house of Godown Road area under Ward No. 3 of Raipur municipality in the morning.
Police and locals said the victims were attacked with a sharp weapon. Shahinur, Sayma and Shifa were taken to Raipur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead. Ikra, who was critically injured, was referred to Dhaka for better treatment but died on the way.
The suspected attacker was identified as Antar Majumdar, a fruit trader from Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali. After the attack, local people caught him and beat him severely. He was later taken to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said Shahinur’s family had been living in the rented house for several years. Her husband, Kamal, died from electrocution a few years ago, after which she had been raising her three daughters and a son.
According to police and local sources, Antar had previously lived in the same building with his wife and left the residence around seven to eight months ago. Police suspect he was known to the family and entered the house on Thursday morning.
A neighbour became suspicious after seeing Antar at the house and asked him why he had come. He reportedly said he was there to repair a water pipe. The neighbour then locked the collapsible gate and alerted locals, who later caught him.
Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Baharul Alam said five injured people were brought to the hospital following the incident. He confirmed that the mother and two daughters were declared dead at the hospital, while the injured daughter later died while being taken to Dhaka.
Laxmipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Abu Tarek said the motive behind the killings was yet to be determined and an investigation was underway.
The SP said that the situation turned tense when locals gathered at the scene. At least seven police personnel were injured after being hit by bricks and stones while trying to control the crowd.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raipur Circle) Md Abdur Rashid said the bodies had been kept at the hospital and police were working to uncover the motive and details behind the killings.
