Quazi Shairul Hasan, former Managing Director (MD) of the multinational financial institution Saudi-Bangladesh Industrial and Agricultural Investment Company (SABINCO), has been appointed Chairman of Sammilito Islami Bank.

Meanwhile, Abedur Rahman, former Deputy Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank, has been appointed Managing Director of Sammilito Islami Bank.

The Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance announced the appointments through two separate letters issued on Monday (June 8, 2026).

An FID official said, “They have been appointed. However, they will require a no-objection certificate from Bangladesh Bank before assuming their responsibilities.”

Sammilito Islami Bank was formed during the previous interim government's tenure through the merger of five Shariah-based private banks"Exim Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Union Bank and Social Islami Bank"which had been facing financial distress.

On December 1, 2025, Bangladesh Bank granted the final licence to Sammilito Islami Bank, and former Secretary Mohammad Ayub Mia was appointed Chairman of the newly formed bank.

However, the individual selected as Managing Director later declined to join the bank.

After the BNP came to power in February this year, Mostaqur Rahman was appointed Governor of Bangladesh Bank. Subsequently, on March 16, Ayub Mia resigned from his position as Chairman of Sammilito Islami Bank.

Since then, the bank has been operating without a Chairman and a Managing Director.
