Dhaka University (DU) administration has launched a series of initiatives this week aimed at strengthening research, fostering international collaboration, and upgrading academic infrastructure.

University authorities are working to ensure a secure campus environment while elevating the institution’s global rankings through various development projects.

For maritime research, DU held a seminar to launch modern ocean observation and environmental modelling in the country’s coastal waters. Event, organised by the university’s International Centre for Ocean Governance in partnership with China’s First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), also featured discussions on a potential memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding early warning systems for maritime disasters.

Academic development also saw a major boost as the Department of Geology established a TK one crore endowment fund. Donated by Dr. Mir Mubinul Huq to honor his late brother Mir Moinul Huq and former UNESCO Prof Dr. John Alfred Talent, the fund is intended to support ongoing research activities within the department.

Meanwhile, three students from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department showcased their research at the 10th IEEE Electron Devices Technology and Manufacturing Conference in Penang, Malaysia. Under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Mainul Hossain, the team presented four research papers at the global event, which drew over 700 academics and industry professionals from 23 countries.

University is preparing to celebrate Dhaka University Day on 1 July. The day will feature a colourful procession led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, followed by a discussion meeting at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).

Additionally, the university is set to partner with UNICEF to introduce a "Graduate Diploma in Child Protection" programme at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, aiming to strengthen child protection systems across Bangladesh.

DU VC recently concluded a seven-day visit to Turkey, where he participated in the Zero Waste Forum. During his trip, he engaged in bilateral discussions and sought to establish an MoU between the university and the Zero Waste Foundation to promote inclusive environmental practices. While the VC was abroad, Prof Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, Pro-VC (Academic) managed his routine responsibilities.

On the campus front, administration has appointed Prof Abdus Salam from the Department of Chemistry as the new provost of Salimullah Muslim Hall.

Following the Eid-ul-Adha and summer holidays, office activities resumed on June 1, with classes scheduled to begin on June 22.
