Free education for girls up to graduation proposed

The government has proposed extending free education for girls up to the undergraduate level, alongside introducing mid-day meals, expanding technology-based learning and strengthening support for disadvantaged students.

The government has unveiled a series of education sector initiatives in the proposed FY2026-27 budget, including free education for girls up to the graduation level and the gradual introduction of a nationwide mid-day meal programme.

Presenting the budget in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Adviser Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said poor students will receive school uniforms, shoes and school bags to support their education.

The government also plans to ensure inclusive education for children with disabilities and special needs by providing specialised assistive technologies and learning materials.

To improve student nutrition and health, a mid-day meal programme will be introduced and expanded across the country in phases. Sanitation and healthcare facilities for female students and teachers will also be strengthened.

The budget further emphasises technology-driven education through the implementation of the "One Teacher, One Tab" programme, establishment of multimedia classrooms and expansion of free Wi-Fi facilities in educational institutions.

In addition, the government plans to strengthen industry-academia collaboration, expand apprenticeship and internship opportunities and promote startup activities to encourage youth entrepreneurship.
