The government is working with the goal of launching the Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) by December 16, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita said on Tuesday afternoon.

She made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a two-day training workshop on aviation journalism organized by the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB).

The minister noted that the previous government left the Third Terminal in poor condition and the interim government took no initiative, adding that current plans aim to open it by December 16.

Regarding necessity, she said that while it was initiated under the previous administration, the new terminal remains essential due to the limited capacity of existing facilities.

Minister Afroza Khanam Rita stated that she observed widespread disarray across aviation and tourism sectors upon taking office, with no available funds left behind, and emphasized her ongoing efforts to turn the situation around.

She remarked that the previous government prioritized personal gain over aviation sector development and used the ministry as a subsidized platform for private interests.

The minister also revealed plans to establish Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities in Lalmonirhat, stating that discussions are underway with Boeing, Airbus, Singapore, and various institutions and countries.

She stated that establishing an MRO hub in Lalmonirhat will create international-standard aircraft maintenance capabilities, build skilled manpower, and generate new employment and investment opportunities.

Additionally, she outlined plans to establish a flying academy in coordination with the Air Force Welfare Trust to train underprivileged, talented students as pilots without exorbitant costs.

Under the initiative, selected students will receive free training in piloting and aviation fields, which they will repay after securing employment, helping reduce the pilot shortage and create jobs abroad.

She called on journalists to highlight the sector's potential and positive aspects alongside pointing out shortcomings and offering constructive criticism.

Presided over by PIB Director General Faruq Wasif, the inaugural event was addressed by Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Member Air Commodore Md Nur-E-Alam and aviation expert Wing Commander (Retd) ATM Nazrul Islam.
