Fragile fiscal structure poses risk to execution: Debapriya

Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, has described the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 as one of the most thoughtful budgets prepared in recent years. However, he cautioned that the country's fragile fiscal structure could pose significant challenges to its implementation.

On Thursday, Debapriya said the overall policy framework outlined by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury reflects a carefully considered approach to economic management.

According to him, the budget's core policy framework is built around a phased economic strategy. It envisions one year of stabilization, followed by three years of recovery and an additional year dedicated to reconstruction and long-term transformation.

He noted that the measures announced so far indicate that the government has placed strong emphasis on deregulation and liberalization to revive economic activities and stimulate growth.

He concluded by saying that the success of the budget would depend on how effectively the government translates its vision into action and advances the reform agenda in the coming years.
