At least seven people were killed and 67 others were hospitalized on Sunday after an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials said.

According to officials, the leak originated from the seafood processing facility and spread across the premises. Workers at the plant complained of breathing difficulties, while some suffered bleeding from the mouth and nose, reports Xinhua.

The affected workers were rushed to nearby private hospitals for treatment, but seven of them, all women, later died.

Police, disaster management, fire and emergency services, and health officials were immediately deployed to the site to conduct rescue operations.

A 30-member team equipped with gas detection devices and other specialised rescue equipment has been mobilised to contain and fix the leak.
