Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman received a state-level red-carpet reception and a guard of honour upon his arrival in Malaysia. His first overseas visit as head of government has generated significant enthusiasm among the Bangladeshi expatriate community living in Malaysia.

Expatriates are particularly hopeful that the visit will lead to the reopening of the labour market, the dismantling of airline ticket syndicates, and solutions to various challenges faced by migrant workers.

The special flight carrying the Prime Minister landed at the Bunga Raya Complex VIP Terminal of Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 845pm local time on Sunday. He was welcomed by Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Dr. Zulkifli Hasan. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, were accorded a red-carpet reception and a guard of honour, while the national anthems of both countries were played.

Among those present at the welcome ceremony were Bangladesh High Commissioner Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury, Deputy High Commissioner Sahanara Monika, and senior officials from both countries.

The Prime Minister was later escorted to the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur Hotel in a special motorcade. The nearly 50-minute route from the airport to the hotel was decorated with the national flags of Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Upon arrival at the hotel, he was greeted by a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates. At around 1030pm, he addressed a gathering of distinguished guests. More than 500 attendees, including leaders of BNP Malaysia, expatriate teachers, students, engineers, workers, and officials of the Bangladesh High Commission, participated in the event.

The Prime Minister's delegation includes Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, Overseas Employment Adviser Mahadi Amin, and Defence Adviser AKM Shamsul Islam.

On Monday morning in Putrajaya, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will formally welcome his Bangladeshi counterpart. This will be followed by a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders and bilateral talks between their respective delegations. A joint press conference is scheduled afterward. During the visit, two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed to enhance cooperation in the tourism and cultural sectors.

Diplomatic sources indicate that high-level discussions will focus on trade, investment, labour market cooperation, regional collaboration, and strengthening economic partnerships. Although Malaysia remains one of Bangladesh's most important trading partners in Southeast Asia, bilateral trade continues to favor Malaysia.

Meanwhile, expatriates' biggest expectation is the resolution of ongoing complexities in Malaysia's labour market. They want the labour market to be fully reopened for Bangladeshi workers and all forms of syndication in the recruitment process to be eliminated.
