Youth dies in mob beating in Tongi

An unidentified youth, aged about 22-25, died in a mob beating on suspicion of attempted mugging in the Tongi area of Gazipur on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 am on Station Road under Tongi East Police Station (PS). 
Police and locals said, the youth attempted to snatch a mobile phone from a passenger aboard a moving bus in the Station Road area, but passengers caught him red-handed and handed him over to an angry crowd, and then was beaten by that mob, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

On information, PS police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured youth, took him to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Later-on, the body was sent from the hospital to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Tongi East PS’s Inspector (Investigation) Md Zillur Rahman said an investigation into the incident is underway and efforts are being made to identify the deceased.

“Necessary legal action will be taken after completing the legal procedures, and a case will be filed in connection with the incident,” he added.
