The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal telecommunication equipment and unauthorized wireless installations, including in several areas of Dhaka.

As part of the ongoing drive, authorities are seizing unlicensed walkie-talkies being used by various organizations and filing cases with local police stations against offenders, says a press release.

BTRC officials said that under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act, 2001 (Amendment-2026), obtaining spectrum allocation and a wireless equipment licence from the regulator is mandatory for the possession, use, import, marketing, or operation of any walkie-talkie or wireless communication device. Violations of the law are punishable by legal action.

The regulator has urged business establishments, security service providers, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and all other commercial entities and individuals to refrain from using wireless communication devices without the necessary approvals and licences.

BTRC warned that its enforcement operations against illegal and unlicensed wireless equipment will continue across the country and that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the relevant regulations.

The commission also called on all stakeholders to comply with applicable laws and regulations to ensure proper management of wireless communication services and safeguard the public interest.
