The Prime Minister returned home on Friday after concluding a six-day state visit to China that saw the signing of 17 memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The Prime Minister and his delegation returned to Dhaka after an important tour that included meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and other senior leaders. Officials described the visit as a significant step towards expanding long-term strategic cooperation between the two countries.
On the final day of the visit, the Prime Minister held talks with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji and other senior Chinese leaders at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
He left Beijing at 5:16pm local time on a special China Southern Airlines flight and reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport shortly after 8:00pm Bangladesh time.
Briefing reporters, Prime Minister's Adviser Mahdi Amin said China had proposed an economic corridor linking Bangladesh, Myanmar and China to strengthen regional connec tivity, economic cooperation and multimodal transport.
China also expressed interest in modernising Chattogram Port and upgrading Mongla Port into regional hubs serving Bangladesh and neighbouring countries.
According to officials, both countries agreed to expand cooperation in culture, media, technology, knowledge exchange and employment generation. China also pledged support for Mandarin language education through teachers and infrastructure.
The two sides discussed expanding cooperation in healthcare, including advanced medical technology, robotic surgery and hospital development, while also exploring ways to ease visa processing for Bangladeshi patients seeking treatment in China.
Bangladesh reiterated its position on the Rohingya issue, emphasising safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation. Mahdi Amin said China had agreed to facilitate dialogue with Myanmar when required to support the repatriation process.
For the first time, Bangladesh and China agreed in principle to establish a "2+2" dialogue mechanism involving the foreign and defence ministries of both countries to facilitate regular strategic discussions.
China also welcomed Bangladesh's interest in joining BRICS and appreciated bilateral cooperation in multilateral forums, officials said.
A total of 17 MOUs were signed during the visit. According to the Prime Minister's Office, 13 agreements were signed at the ministerial level in the presence of the two heads of government, three between the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Chinese institutions, and one between the ruling parties of the two countries.
During the visit, the Prime Minister also attended the World Economic Forum's Summer Davos 2026 in Dalian and held meetings with Chinese political and business leaders.
