An improvised explosive device (IED) concealed inside an umbrella was recovered beneath the Motijheel Metro Rail Station on Friday night, prompting a temporary suspension of metro services before police safely defused the device.
Motijheel Zone Assistant Commissioner Hussain Muhammad Farabi said an experienced Dhaka Metropolitan Police bomb disposal team later neutralised the IED without incident. According to police, locals noticed a flashing light coming from an umbrella left beneath the station and alerted officers. Police immediately cordoned off the area and suspended metro services as a precaution.
The bomb disposal unit subsequently carried out a controlled explosion to safely defuse the device.
Police have launched an investigation to identify who left the IED at the scene and determine the motive behind the incident.
