A writ petition has been filed before the High Court challenging the legality of the recently constituted ad hoc Bangladesh Bar Council and seeking a directive to hold Bar Council elections within 30 days.

The petition also sought suspension of the ad hoc committee until an elected council assumes office.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ on Wednesday before the relevant bench of the High Court, making the Secretary of the Law and Justice Division and others respondents.

The petition follows the government’s constitution of a 15-member ad hoc Bar Council on Tuesday under Article 4(2) of the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972.
