Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of Opposition in the parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called for the development of honest, competent and socially acceptable leadership, saying moral integrity and accountability should remain the foundation of political and organisational leadership.
The Jamaat chief made the remarks while addressing the closing session of a three-day training camp for district and metropolitan working committee members, at Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Moghbazar area on Saturday. The programme began on Thursday and attended by the senior party leaders.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman said organisational discipline is one of Jamaat's greatest strengths and described it as a unique blessing that distinguishes the party from many other political organisations. The party places importance on discipline, ethics and accountability before Allah, warning delegates that a lifetime of achievements and reputation could be damaged by a single mistake, he added.
On the party's political vision, he said the ultimate objective of Jamaat should not merely be attaining state power but seeking the pleasure of Allah through public service, urging the party members to develop self-discipline and moral character before attempting to reform society.
Referring to regional issues, he expressed concern over the condition of Muslims in India, claiming they continue to face insecurity and discrimination. He also mentioned the situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, saying many Muslims there continue to struggle under difficult circumstances.
About his party's parliamentary representation, he Jamaat currently holds 90 seats in Parliament, including reserved seats for women. Voters have placed their trust in the party with the expectation that it will work to establish transparent and corruption-free governance, he added.
He highlighted the importance of grassroots politics, and said candidates for local government elections should be selected on the basis of honesty, integrity, lawful earnings, public acceptance and leadership ability rather than personal influence or organisational ranks. Identifying capable individuals at the local level will help build responsible leadership for the future, he added.
Jamaat chief also emphasized the importance of strengthening families and respecting women, saying both men and women have essential roles in building society, organisations and the nation.
He urged party members to honour mothers, support women in their responsibilities and encourage their participation in religious and social activities.
