The transfer of primary school teachers has been suspended indefinitely, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said on Monday.

Speaking at a briefing at the Secretariat, he said the transfer process would remain suspended until further notice as the government reviews irregularities and complications in the existing system.

“We are suspending all transfers for now for the recruitment of more than 14,000 teachers. Once the recruitment process is completed, transfers will resume,” Hajjaj said.

He said the government would decide later whether transfers would continue under the existing policy or a revised system.

The state minister said 14,384 candidates were finally recommended for appointment as assistant teachers following written and oral examinations held earlier this year.

He said the government was also reviewing the stipend system and other aspects of primary education, with the aim of making support more needs-based and focused on financial need.

Hajjaj said the government was working to make primary education more effective, inclusive and quality-oriented while strengthening non-formal education programmes for children and adolescents who remain outside the formal education system.
