Prof Abul Kasem no more

Bangla Academy President and eminent academic Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haque died of a cardiac arrest in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. He was 85.

His daughter Suchita Sharmin, daughter-in-law Razia Rahman and Bangla Academy Director General Mohammad Azam confirmed this information. 

According to family members, Prof Fazlul Haque fell ill while having lunch at a restaurant in Mirpur and was rushed to the National Heart Foundation Hospital. He was pronounced dead between 2:30pm and 3pm.  

Fazlul Haque, who had long been recognised for his independent intellectual outlook and contributions to Bengali language, literature and political thought, was appointed president of the Bangla Academy by the interim government on October 27, 2024.
