Water levels in six rivers currently above danger mark as rainfall continues and upstream flows, raising concerns regarding fresh flooding across parts of Bangladesh, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) warned.
Warning stated, short-term flooding may develop or worsen in parts of Sylhet, Chattogram and other northern regions over the next two to three days. The warning was issued on Thursday (July 9) in a forecast signed by Assistant Engineer Md. Mahmudul Islam Shovon.
According to the forecast, water levels at several points of the Sangu, Matamuhuri, Manu, Khowai, Dhalai and Kushiyara rivers are already flowing above the danger level.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted over the next two days in Sylhet, Chattogram, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Rajshahi divisions. Indian states: Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal are to expect similar weather.
The forecast stated flooding may occur in the adjacent areas of Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in Bandarban, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar area within the next two days.
Water levels have risen in several rivers in Feni, Khagrachhari and Chattogram, which may provoke short-term flooding in some areas. Low-lying parts of Lakshmipur and Noakhali are subjected to face temporary overflow.
Flood situation in Moulvibazar and Habiganj may remain stable. However, overflow on several rivers could cause fresh flooding in low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh.
Residents of the surrounding Surma and Kushiyara river banks are advised to be cautious as the rivers are expected to see rapid rise over the next three days. This may worsen the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj. Teesta River may cause short-term flooding in parts of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur.
Water levels in the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are also expected to rise. Low-lying areas of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat may be temporarily flooded.
