Police have arrested a 48-year-old man on allegations of raping his 21-year-old "religious daughter-in-law" in Sherpur upazila of Bogura district.
The accused, identified as Md Ashraf Ali, a resident of Andikumra village under Shahbandegi Union, was sent to jail by a court on Wednesday (July 8). He was handed over to police by local residents on Tuesday afternoon after they allegedly detained him.
According to the case statement and local sources, the victim's husband has been living in Dhaka for the past three months for work. The couple had been renting a room at the house of a local resident, Md Badsha, in Andikumra village. A curtain divided the room into two sections, with the couple living on one side and Ashraf Ali and his wife on the other.
The complaint alleges that after Ashraf Ali's wife left for her parental home on July 1, he entered the victim's room on the night of July 5 and allegedly raped her.
The incident came to light after neighbours questioned the woman over their suspicions, following which she disclosed the alleged assault, according to the case documents. When the allegation became known, Ashraf Ali allegedly attempted to flee but was detained by local residents on July 7 before being handed over to police.
Police later rescued the woman and took her to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex for a medical examination.
Confirming the arrest, Sub-Inspector Subrata Sing of Sherpur Police Station said the accused had been arrested in connection with a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
"The accused was produced before the court and sent to jail on Wednesday. The investigation is underway," the police officer said.
