India has commissioned a new indigenous stealth frigate, 'INS Mahendragiri' , into its Eastern Naval Command, marking another milestone in strengthening the country's maritime defence capabilities. The warship is capable of carrying the supersonic 'BrahMos' cruise missile, one of the world's fastest and most lethal missile systems.

The induction ceremony was held on Saturday in 'Visakhapatnam', Andhra Pradesh, where Indian Defence Minister **Rajnath Singh** described the advanced frigate as a significant step in enhancing India's naval power. He said the vessel can be equipped with the land-attack variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which is regarded as one of the world's most powerful precision-strike weapons.

According to Singh, INS Mahendragiri is fitted with a medium-range surface-to-air missile system integrated with a multi-function radar capable of detecting and neutralising long-range aerial threats.

The frigate's weapon suite also includes indigenous rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, an integrated anti-submarine warfare system, an electronic warfare suite, and a close-in weapon system (CIWS), providing comprehensive defence against multiple threats.

The defence minister said the new warship would significantly strengthen India's ability to safeguard its maritime interests, both along its coastline and in the deep seas.

Highlighting the changing nature of modern warfare, Singh noted that emerging technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence (AI), cyber warfare, space-based capabilities, hypersonic weapons and unmanned systems are reshaping future conflicts. However, he stressed that conventional military strength remains the cornerstone of an effective defence strategy.

"Advanced technologies and conventional platforms are not substitutes but complementary to each other," he said, adding that while future wars may increasingly involve AI-driven systems, victory will ultimately depend on national resolve, well-trained personnel and reliable military capability.

INS Mahendragiri is the sixth indigenous stealth frigate to join the Indian Navy over the past 18 months. The first vessel of the class, 'INS Nilgiri', was commissioned in January 2025.

Designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by 'Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited' in Mumbai, the frigate is capable of carrying out a wide range of maritime missions, including air defence, surface and anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction and surveillance.

Built with more than 75 percent indigenous components, INS Mahendragiri can also operate multi-role helicopters. Equipped with advanced stealth features, modern sensors, network-centric warfare systems and state-of-the-art weaponry, the frigate further reinforces India's indigenous naval capabilities.
