Digholia Press Club condemns gun attack on Khulna journalists
Digholia Press Club expressed severe condemnation and anger over a gun attack on journalists by miscreants in Khulna. They also demanded immediate identification, arrest, and exemplary punishment of the culprits.
The incident occurred around 12:30 am on Tuesday (July 14). It took place in front of Jalil’s shop on the western side of the United Nations Child Park in Khulna city.
Several journalists were conversing at the spot during the attack. They included Rakibul Islam Moti, Treasurer of Metropolitan Journalist Union (MUJ) Khulna; Rafiual Islam Tutul, former Member Secretary of Khulna Press Club and Khulna Bureau Chief of Star News; Awal Sheikh, Khulna Bureau Chief of The Business Standard; and Syed Rana Kabir, MUJ member and Staff Reporter of Dainik Khulnanchal.
Two miscreants arrived on a motorcycle at that time. They fired shots targeting the journalists and fled the scene quickly. The incident caused severe anxiety and panic among the journalist community in Khulna.
MUJ Khulna organized a protest rally and human chain in front of the Khulna Press Club at 12:00 pm on Wednesday (July 15). They demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers. Leaders and members of various journalist organizations participated in the program. They strongly protested the incident and demanded safety for journalists.
In a joint statement, Digholia Press Club leaders said such a heinous attack is a serious threat to independent journalism and media safety. They strongly urged law enforcement agencies to identify the attackers, bring them to justice, and ensure exemplary punishment.
The statement was signed by Digholia Press Club President Md. Shahidul Islam and Acting General Secretary Md. Jamal Hossain. Senior Vice-President Gazi Jamshedul Islam Sourav, Vice-President Engineer S. M. Wahid Murad, Joint General Secretary K. M. Asaduzzaman, and Assistant Secretary Md. Monirul Islam also signed it.
Other signatories included Treasurer Wasik Ullah Hosaini Rajib, Office Secretary Md. Ashraf Hossain, Publicity Secretary Md. Salah Uddin Mollya, Information and Technology Secretary Tohidul Islam Rupam, Sports Secretary Md. Rana Molla, Executive Members M. Farhad Kadir, S. M. Rafiqul Islam Babu, Md. Shamim Haq, and S. M. Habibur Rahman Tarek.
Executive Committee Members Arifullah Islam Hasan, S. M. Shamim, and General Members Mallick Moksedur Rahman Khokon, Md. Habibur Rahman Mallick, Professor Md. Lokman Hossain, S. M. Mehedi Hasan, Kishor Kumar Dey, S. M. Shamim-2, Sheikh Rubel, Raju Ahmed, and other leaders of the press club also joined the statement.
