Dhaka is now facing the consequences of continuous downpour as kitchen markets have been hit with price hikes. Supply disruptions have pushed prices of various vegetables by Tk 20 to Tk 40 per kg within a week.
Prices of almost all vegetables have crossed Tk 100 per kg. Green chillies are selling at around Tk 200 kg.
This was seen in various markets around the capital on Friday (July 17).
Traders said vegetable prices rose due to lower supply caused by continuous rain. Supply fell short of demand as vegetable-laden trucks from different districts delayed reaching the capital.
Besides, heavy rainfall submerged vegetable fields in many areas, damaging production. This further worsened the market supply crisis.
Visits to kitchen markets showed brinjals selling at Tk 90 to Tk 120 per kg. Bitter gourd is priced at Tk 80 to Tk 100, pointed gourd and okra at Tk 70 to Tk 80, ribbed gourd at Tk 80 to Tk 90, snake gourd at Tk 70 to Tk 80, and cucumber at Tk 120 to Tk 130 per kg. Prices of these vegetables rose by Tk 20 to Tk 40 per kg compared to a few days ago.
However, papaya prices remain relatively low. Papaya is selling at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg. Meanwhile, carrots are selling at Tk 160 per kg.
